Beyond the 95 Theses: Martin Luther's Life, Thought and Lasting Legacy
by Stephen Nichols
P&R Publishing, 2016
Paperback, 281 pages
Beyond the 95 Theses is not merely another volume rehashing widely know facts of Luther's life. Stephan Nichols has taken upon himself the task of highlighting and promoting the writings of Luther with which many readers may not be familiar. Nichols accomplishes this by dividing Luther's works into three sections. "Luther, the Reformer" looks specifically at The Three Treatises, The Bondage of the Will and Confession Concerning Christ's Supper, as well as some of Luther's shorter writings on ethics. In "Luther, the Pastor", he examines The Small Catechism, Table Talk writings, On Councils and the Church, and includes Luther's hymns and sermons. The final section contains the entirety of the original 95 theses annotated in modern English. The contexts from Luther's life, which produced these works, are interwoven through each chapter, bringing added life to each of Luther's works.
