In answering the question of the title, What Did You Expect?, Paul Tripp repeatedly brings the reader back to the Word of God for answers. The subject matter is broken into 6 commitments: 1. We will give ourselves to a regular lifestyle of confession and forgiveness; 2. We will make growth and change our daily agenda; 3. We will work together to build a sturdy bond if trust; 4. We will commit to building a relationship of love; 5. We will deal with our differences with appreciation and grace; 6. We will work to protect our marriage. Each of these commitments is dealt with in two chapters. Each chapter begins with a real-life illustration either from his own marriage or from that of a couple he has counseled, and from there moves on to define the true problem and lay out the Biblical path to a solution. The struggles presented are real and at times heartbreaking and to all appearances hopeless. The couples and the issues are dealt with compassionately and realistically, giving hope and help to others in similar situations. The Biblical call to action is clear.
The material presented is very accessible. Paul Tripp’s writing style is both readable and compelling. Married couples, whether newly married or celebrating a 50th anniversary, will find themselves somewhere in these pages as we persevere here in a fallen state in a fallen world. Those providing counsel to others whether pastorally or as friends will find this a valuable resource.
